Biography

Barb Birrittella is a mechanical engineer with the U.S. Ice Drilling Program at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. Barb is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining specialized ice drilling equipment used in the Polar Regions. She has deployed to the South Pole twice in support of the hot water drill used to construct the IceCube Neutrino Observatory (2018 – 2020). She was part of the drilling team at Summit Station, Greenland drilling holes for Radio Neutrino Observatory – Greenland (2022). Barb has also designed and built equipment used in particle physics projects such as Lux-Zeplin (LZ), Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE), and the Askaryan Radio Array (ARA).
